China: We will support Russia against Europe and the United States

More bad news for the government of Ukraine. The Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun held a video call with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu on Wednesday. China and Russia pledged to bring their military relations to a new high under the strategic guidance of the leaders of both countries. The new Chinese Defense Minister further explained that the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for the new era has maintained a high level of development. Dong also pointed out that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two superpowers.

He called on the two sides to implement the important consensus of the heads of state of the two countries, resolutely respond to global challenges, constantly enhance strategic mutual trust, continue to expand pragmatic cooperation and push the relationship between the two militaries to a higher level. Dong also urged joint efforts to deepen bilateral comprehensive strategic coordination and maintain global security and stability.

Shoigu, for his part, said that under the guidance of the two heads of state, Russia-China relations are at the best level in history.
Russia is ready to work with China to take this year’s 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties as a new starting point to innovate the areas and modes of cooperation between the two militaries and to push relations between the two countries and two militaries to a new level.

“The Chinese and Russian militaries must implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, resolutely respond to global challenges, continuously enhance strategic mutual trust, and contribute to deepening China-Russia relations,” Dong told Shoygu.
It is Dong’s first public communication with any foreign official since he was picked by President Xi Jinping as China’s new defense minister last month. As a former navy commander, Dong succeeded Gen. Li Shangfu who was unceremoniously removed last October.

There now seems to be a sort of synergy around Russia’s desire to see a dismantling of the post–World War II order that no longer really privileges them beyond their Security Council veto. The Chinese government, as well as most African leaders seem to agree on this.
